Rusting ship sensor

Is it true that there are sensors that, from a distance, can detect that a ships is rusting?

Yes, when metals are corroding there are currents flowing in the water around the corrosion cell. By measuring the voltage potential between two locations in the water it is possible to “tap” the corrosion currents of their information about ship size, propulsion system and more.
