Isn’t an underwater weapon triggered from some distance by a magnetic field less effective than a hit by a mine that explodes by direct hull contact? |

Surprisingly it is a fact that a given amount of explosive gives more damages to a ship if it is detonated on a certain distance from the hull. Apart from this fact; it is far easier to detect a “hovering” sea mine in the water column rather than a disguised contraption hidden in the bottom sediment.
