When magnetic sea mines are mentioned there are the actually two very different weapons that fit that description. A small charge with permanent magnets for application on a steel hull is one magnetic mine. The other magnetic mine is a large explosive charge that is triggered on a distance by a ships interference with the background magnetic field. The detonation is set to go off at a distance of 5 – 50 meters from the hull.

The degaussing system helps the ship to avoid the later situation but a permanent magnet will still stick to a hull of steel despite the use of a degaussing system.
